Female founders: Q&A with the co-founders of Luella Grey

Meet Sarah and Rachel - the co-founders of Luella Grey, who will be joining us in store this week with their beautiful, modern handbags and purses. Beautifully crafted, bridging the gap between designer and the high-street with a range of cross-body, totes, purses and shoppers, all in their beautiful range of leathers and suedes, with their signature molten hardware.

Here we interview the pair on the Luella Grey look, their inspiration and favourite pieces from the AW Collection.

Tell us the story behind Luella Grey

Luella Grey London was started by us - Sarah and Rachel. We met in 2011 (I was the Buyer and Rachel the Designer), whilst working at Dune London where we designed, created and launched the handbag range. With over 20 years of combined experience, we took the plunge, set up our own brand and in February 2019, Luella Grey London was born. The brand name is a collaboration of family names from relatives close to our hearts that had a love for all things beautiful - handbags and jewellery!  Luella Grey London offers clean, sleek product with statement metal detailing. All metal ware is individually designed - the bespoke molten plate representing our signature look.

Who is the Luella Grey woman?

There are many Luella Grey women out there! We want our brand to appeal to women of all ages. If you appreciate individual design and craftsmanship, you will appreciate Luella Grey. In a few words, the Luella Grey customer is stylish, charismatic, ambitious and an all round classy girl!

What are you most passionate about, what do you want Luella Grey to stand for?

We wanted to develop the type of product that we, ourselves would want to own and wear. Luella Grey has been created to bridge the gap between the high street and high end design, offering the customer a bespoke range of handbags that feel luxurious at affordable prices. With only twenty to fifty pieces produced of each style, customers are purchasing something truly unique.

Which other British independent designers do you admire?

Sophia Webster! Her ability to consistently bring creative fun to the accessories market is admirable. Sophie Hulme (pictured) is a personal favourite of ours with her simplistic designs and statement hardware. And from a furniture perspective (Rachel loves furniture!), Terance Conran is definitely up there!

Tell us about your favourite 3 pieces from Luella Grey this season

The Amelie Tote - she is the must-have tote of the season with beautiful feature handles. Amelie is minimal and sophisticated on the outside and functional on the inside. She has three compartments to organise your everyday essentials making her a fantastic work bag.

The Astrid Shopper - With feature tiger-printed handles, Astrid sets you apart from the rest, offering a stylish accompaniment to your every day. With it’s spacious interior, Astrid offers enough room to accommodate your laptop, work and key essentials making this style a versatile purchase.

What’s next for Luella Grey?

What is your favourite Made The Edit style this season?
